for rotating stars,gears and some cool oldscool stuff u can try a gif, because the gif support is realy cool for hardcore createurs,... its a littly tricky, i know 
must be spend L.bit of time and u can create it with some paint programms gifs,
beware, they must have only 3-5 colors in full size, (i try to make 640x480) and then the file isnt to big,
the trick: all of my gifs have only little mass of color, and they have max 10 pictures,
have fun, =).......
